Hello everyone
A quick question upfront: What certifications or licenses does a person need to perform electrical work?
1) General work on the household electrical system, such as installing outlets, setting up air conditioning units (so, not just plugging a toaster into a socket)
2) If this is something different:
Connecting an inverter (from a photovoltaic system) to the house wiring and power grid. (This is not about the grid feed-in approval by companies like Axpo, but the actual connection.)
We recently had a renovation done. Unfortunately, the construction company hired an external individual to carry out some electrical work on the house. It seemed about as professional as if I had asked a "friend" to do it. Since we paid a significant amount for the entire project and there are now some defects, this needs to be fixed. But I want to make sure that the work is done only by someone who has the necessary certifications or licenses.
I hope this is the right place to ask and I look forward to your experiences.
Thank you and best regards
Felix

The Low Voltage Electrical Installation Ordinance (NIV) clearly defines who is allowed to perform which types of installations or connections:
- Anyone may carry out installations within their own home (owner-occupied or rented), provided residual current device (RCD) protection is used and only single-phase connections are involved
- Qualified electricians are permitted to perform all installations themselves within owner-occupied homes
-- In both cases, the installations must be inspected and approved by a licensed electrical contracting company
- All other installations must be carried out by companies holding a valid license. At least one person with a master electrician certificate is required in the company
- Anyone can obtain an electrical connection permit (by completing a course and exam) to connect devices such as kitchen appliances, mirrored cabinets, photovoltaic system inverters, boilers, heating systems, etc.
The entire process is supervised by ESTI.
Best regards

Serena1990-129 Sep 2015 09:41Thank you for your advice. I understand better now, as it is especially important that the inspection is carried out by professionals. The wiring can be done by trained workers, but the inspection must be carried out by specialized companies.

herrmann-121 Feb 2016 12:11The electrical wiring on construction sites is often done nowadays by semi-skilled helpers. The inspection is important and must be carried out by trained professionals. In my own home, I can do quite a lot myself. Just nothing must go wrong, or else trouble will come into the house.
