Hello,

I’m hoping for help from experienced Ikea DIYers. I have a Vika Amon table, which isn’t exactly solid wood. (Surface: hardboard, frame: chipboard, ABS plastic, filler/spacer material: paper, bottom: hardboard). I’d like to drill a rather large hole (1 cm (0.4 inches)) to attach a monitor mount. Do you think it will hold up? Or will it not be stable because of the paper?

Thanks for the help.

For a VIKA tabletop, I would personally avoid drilling any holes 😳
since it’s probably constructed like LACK (and that’s why it’s so light).
The inside is made of cardboard and air. So, as I said, better not do it.

That’s definitely possible. You just have to accept that this isn’t exactly a super-secure mounting for the monitor. But honestly, you probably don’t need one, since you’re not going to be holding onto it tightly.

You’ll need to be confident enough to drill carefully. If the drill bit comes through the bottom of the panel and you apply too much pressure, it can crack or break the panel from underneath. That will create a hole that’s anything but clean or round on the bottom side. If you manage to avoid that, just place a washer large enough between the nut and the underside of the panel before tightening. Otherwise, tightening (and don’t overdo it) will press into the panel since it’s not solid.

That’s all there is to it.

Have fun with your project!

Hi,

so yes, if I’m not completely mistaken, the tabletop is constructed like the LACK series. That means the top is hollow inside! It consists of air and cardboard strips arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Usually, there are small pre-drilled holes at certain points underneath the tabletop, and only at these points is the surface “solid.”

But what do you mean by monitor mount? If it’s just a riser, it doesn’t necessarily have to be screwed on firmly, right? I can’t really picture what you mean here... 😕
