Hi,

we just had the spontaneous idea that we could skip the underfloor heating in the utility room to save some money. Since it’s mainly used for laundry and maybe storing some food on shelves, heating might not be necessary there. On the other hand, with temperatures around -20°C (-4°F), having a cold room might not be a good idea, especially since you want to dry clothes there as well. Do you have underfloor heating in your utility room? It’s probably pointless to exclude it from the calculation, especially since the room is only 5.62 sqm (60.5 sq ft). The room also has an active Lunos ventilation unit, so there should be sufficient air exchange. However, I’d still be interested in your opinion.

Best regards.

So the annual heating cost savings for 6 sqm (65 sq ft) in our case would be around 15 € if you mistakenly assume that no heat is lost through the interior walls. Since that does happen, the actual savings are probably closer to 2 € (but this is without any data to support it).

The thermal envelope that prevents heat loss to the outside is located on the exterior, not between the hallway and the utility room. Besides the fact that this can be detrimental to the building’s structure, it simply makes little to no sense to not heat an insulated room that is inside the thermal envelope.
