Hello,

I’m a bit puzzled; it seems we have two septic tanks on the property. Is there any reason for this, or could the second tank be something else?

We have a house built in the 1960s with a large plot of land. About 10 years ago, it was connected to the sewer system; before that, all wastewater went into the septic tank.

Now, one septic tank makes perfect sense: it’s right next to the house, close to the wastewater outlets. So far, so good.

But there is another tank about 15–20 m (50–65 feet) from the house with a lid and apparently also a vent pipe sticking up. This one doesn’t seem to serve any purpose. It’s quite far from the house, about 10–15 m (30–50 feet) from the other tank, and we couldn’t find any inflow to it.

We can also rule out any contamination from previous use. When the house was built, there was forest surrounding the area. The tree right next to it is likely older than the house, while the lid looks identical to the other tank’s, so it probably dates back to the original construction.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

We plan to convert at least the front tank into a rainwater cistern. I wouldn’t mind keeping the second one as well, even though it would mean laying about 20 m (65 feet) of pipe to connect it.

It’s a strange situation.
