My toilet cistern is continuously leaking water. Although it’s only a small amount, it drips constantly around the clock. I have now removed the cover plate from the cistern (brand: Geberit), but honestly, I’m not sure what to do next. What steps do I need to take to reseal the system? Do I need to call a professional plumber for something like this?

If water is constantly running, a seal inside the cistern is leaking or the float is no longer functioning properly. The float is a component inside the toilet cistern (you should be able to see it by removing the lid) that is connected to the valve via a lever mechanism; as the water level in the cistern rises, the float also rises and the valve is closed through the lever system. It is possible that something is scaled or stuck.

I had exactly the same problem, and in my case, it was also the float. Thanks for the help 🙂

This can definitely be done as a DIY project and it’s not a big job. We occasionally experience the same issue. In our case, the float often gets stuck, which is a quick fix. If I had to call a professional every time, I’d be broke by now.

A leaking toilet cistern that keeps running is really annoying. It drives up water costs and there's always that noise. We’re experiencing this as well, and each time the issue is with the float valve.

Fortunately, this happens only rarely, but it was also the float. It had become stuck, and I was able to free it without any trouble.
