Hello everyone!
Is it possible to retrofit a TipOn opening mechanism for drawers without much effort?
Blum offers related fittings.
Does anyone know if they are compatible with the Blum drawer slides used in Metod?
Thank you very much for your help.

robi_aus_ffm17 Jan 2016 09:29I took a closer look at the Blum Servodrive and think it’s quite good.
For a rough estimate:
Power supply: approx. €100
Each drive with cable and small parts: approx. €65
Other costs: approx. €100
With 7 drawers, the total is roughly €600, and for 10 drawers, about €800.
In this calculation, I deducted around €50 per drawer for the elimination of handles.
However, if you use the Veddinge drawer fronts and compare them with Voxtrott, you could save about €45 per drawer front on average and subtract that amount.
Then, the additional cost for the Servodrive would only be around €200 – calculated as the number of drawers × €20.
So, for 7 drawers, about €340; for 10 drawers, about €400.
I find that quite interesting for this neat little feature.
Of course, you have to be aware that you’re adding a component that could potentially fail.
Additional questions that would be interesting to know:
1. How durable are the motors?
2. What is the standby power consumption of the power supply?
3. Does the power supply need to be paired and therefore constantly powered, or can it be turned off when the kitchen is not in use?
Ikea expert, do you have any practical experience with this?

In the kitchen, we also omitted the handles on the lowest drawers and installed the push-to-open mechanism. Why?..
....If that works satisfactorily, it would of course be preferable.
I thought this wouldn’t be possible with drawers that have soft-close runners?
Maybe you could explain a bit more how you managed that?

robi_aus_ffm17 Jan 2016 10:17hello macmaddigan,
I only have drawers that are 60cm (24 inches) wide and 20cm (8 inches) high at the bottom, which I use for light items, pans, etc.
If you use push-to-open mechanisms, you won’t have soft-close there and you have to push to close. Since this only affects the three bottom drawers, we found this acceptable. We also got used to opening and closing these drawers by the bottom edge to avoid fingerprints and because they can still be easily slid closed without the push-to-open mechanism. At first, I had push-to-open on both the left and right sides of each drawer, but one side was always opening or closing while the other wasn’t.
So one push-to-open per drawer is enough...

robi_aus_ffm17 Jan 2016 11:15Hello,
that’s not possible. Drilling new holes for the rails on the cabinet carcass would be the smaller issue, but the length of the rails is different, specifically 530 mm (21 inches). The Tandembox cabinet rails are only available in 500 mm (20 inches) and the next size up is 550 mm (22 inches). If you order 1,000 pieces, they might manufacture a custom length for you.I am not a carpenter and have no experience with fittings or hardware.
Simply shortening the longer cabinet rail to fit probably won’t work, right?
Would it maybe be possible to install the fitting as is?
There is also a version with a nominal length of 520 mm (20.5 inches).
In my opinion, the price of about €30 (net) for a 40 kg (88 lb) load capacity is quite reasonable.
There is also a model available for 60 kg (132 lb).
The price does not include the locking mechanism or adjustment adapter. Are these absolutely necessary?

robi_aus_ffm17 Jan 2016 11:34Then I’ll answer myself:
The 3D snap coupling with adjustment adapter is listed under required accessories.
The cost is reasonable at about €5 (around $5.50).
The only remaining question is whether it fits or not.
By the way, the manufacturer is GRASS.
