Hello,

we are currently considering how to position our house on our plot and how this might affect the installation of solar/photovoltaic panels.

Our plot measures 17 x 45 meters (56 x 148 feet), with the shorter sides facing east and west. We plan to place our house at the front, facing the street, leaving about 17 x 30 meters (56 x 98 feet) for the garden at the back. This would mean the roofs are oriented east and west, which is not ideal for solar/photovoltaic panels.

However, we are building a captain’s house (possibly with an additional dormer on the rear side). This would provide one or two small roof surfaces facing south.

Our question is: under these conditions, is it feasible to install a solar thermal or photovoltaic system on the roof? Is the west-facing roof acceptable, or are the small south-facing roof sections sufficient?

Do the calculation... there are plenty of websites that can do this for you. Honestly, I wouldn’t base the orientation and positioning of the house on that. Usually, it only pays off marginally (if at all).... as a tip: check your monthly hot water costs and estimate how long you would need to save 60% of those to reach €3,000.

Thanks for the tip. It really is a very informative thread. 🙂
