ᐅ Screed Heating Phase and Severe Fruit Fly Infestation?

We are building (or having built) our dream house and have had a crazy problem for a few days now.

The exterior of the house is already plastered and painted.
All the windows are installed.
The roller shutter boxes are still empty.
All interior walls are plastered.
Screed has been laid over the underfloor heating.
We are currently in the heating-up phase and ventilating a lot.

For about five days now, we have noticed tiny black flies about 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 inches) in size inside, around all the windows—in huge numbers!
If you wipe them away with a cloth, they seem to be gone… or so you think.
But as soon as the windows are closed, after a few minutes the number builds up again.
This happens on both the ground and upper floors.

We have read a lot online about larvae in flowerpots and fruit and so on, but none of that applies here.
Since we are still building, there are no plants, fruit, or furniture inside the house yet.
We are at a loss on how to get rid of these pests.

Has anyone experienced this problem before?
Does anyone have any ideas?
Could this be related to the current weather—humid, warm, with thunderstorms?
Or nearby meadows and forest?
We would appreciate any advice!

Best regards

Hello Steven,

These are definitely not fruit flies. We’ve had those here occasionally before; they fly in a completely different way.
We also searched everywhere to see if the workers might have left any fruit, drinks, or anything like that... absolutely nothing, nowhere!! And there have been no work activities on the construction site for a week now, as it’s the heating phase.

These are very small, fly poorly and slowly. I can try to take a photo today.
Blue sticky traps... okay... we will give that a try – THANK YOU.

Regards
