Hello,

We want to retrofit electric shutters for the roof window in our new build (the developer wants €2500).

The options are roof window shutters with a wired power connection or with solar power. I have questions about both options.

Wired power connection: How do I connect the shutters to power? I assume an electrician would need to run an electrical cable to a rocker switch for control, but can the cable and switch be installed later by myself? Is it even accessible afterwards? Where exactly should the cable come out?

Solar with battery and wireless switch:

Does anyone have experience with this? Does it work reliably? The roof window faces northeast—is that enough to generate sufficient power?

Does anyone know which wireless technology is used by the major brands like Velux, RotoQ, or others, for example Z-Wave, Zigbee, or proprietary systems?

Our solar shading devices are located on the east and west sides.

They all use nearly the same frequency band, but each has its own proprietary closed protocols. What exactly are you planning that you keep asking? You can assume that you will need one of the “major” gateways compatible with the desired protocol.

In the terraced house, we retrofitted 2 x Heim and Haus units with solar batteries and radio remote controls. They worked just as well as the two Roto units with solar batteries and radio remote controls in the new house. Overall, about 8 years of positive experience.

Do you want to retrofit just the roller blind, or the entire double casement window?
In new constructions, installing a double casement window takes about 2 hours with 2 people.
The roller blind installation takes about 1 hour with 2 people.
I paid around €50 (x6) for installing the double casement window, but I also helped and provided the materials myself.
Roller blinds from Roto and Velux are basically plug-and-play.
Since we have a new build, I went with electric power from the start (solar costs €100 more, but the cable for electricity including the switch also costs about €100).
