Hello

We need to replace our oil heating system. According to our information, operating a pellet heating system is very simple, so we are leaning towards a pellet heating system.

Can anyone help us, especially regarding the advantages and disadvantages of a pellet heating system? Or are there better/more cost-effective alternatives?

Thank you for your help

Hello Rizz

My opinion on affordable heating: oil is, has been, and will continue to be the most cost-effective option! I also looked into pellet heating systems but decided to go with oil again. Pellets would have become too expensive!

Hello rizz,

Converting from oil to pellet heating is technically quite straightforward since you already have a storage room for the pellets after removing the oil tank. However, you would need to install a sloped floor and possibly reduce the size of the storage room.

About 0.9 cubic meters (32 cubic feet) of storage space is required per kilowatt of heating load (a heat demand calculation would be advisable to determine the necessary amount of pellets for a heating season).

The operation of the pellet heating system itself is also quite familiar, similar to oil and gas: automatic ignition, automatic control, and it does not require more space.

The ash pan must be emptied every 5 to 15 weeks depending on consumption. The ash can be disposed of in regular household waste or, if applicable, mixed into the compost.

If you would like to respond to the user's cost concerns regarding insulation nonsense by making some comparative calculations:

1 kg (2.2 lbs) of pellets contains about 5 kWh of energy. This corresponds roughly to 0.5 liters (0.13 gallons) of heating oil.

The cost of the central heating system itself is almost twice as high as that of oil or gas boilers. Whether the lower fuel costs can offset the higher initial investment needs to be calculated.

I have also come across this question and want to replace our oil heating system. It is quite old, and something new is needed here. Therefore, I am interested in a pellet heating system. The initial investment is naturally higher, but I believe it is worth it over the long service life.

We have combined a pellet heating system with solar panels. It works really well. We also have no issues with the wood heating, and I get the wood locally. Next week, I will have a fireplace installed, so winter can come.

I am firmly convinced that different solutions need to be applied here.

So, without any doubt, I am strongly leaning towards a pellet heating system. The initial investment cost is one thing, but the long-term usefulness is much higher compared to oil. I am sure that the oil price will not stay this low in the long run. So, it’s better to switch now than later.
