Hello everyone,

I noticed that the edge of one of the shelves in my Billy bookcase is quite badly damaged – chipped in places and frayed. I want to renew the edge, but I don’t want to just use the usual edge banding because the shelves are made of laminated melamine, and I’m concerned that the new edge band might not adhere properly or could come loose after a short time.

Does anyone have practical tips or experience on the best way to restore the edge to make it as durable as possible?

I’m also considering whether I should go for some kind of sanding and sealing method or stick with applying heat-activated edge banding. Perhaps there are also alternatives like liquid edge solutions or similar?

Looking forward to your recommendations!

I think the Billy shelf is so affordable that it almost seems unreasonable to spend effort on such repairs.

Good point you raise. Of course, I could simply replace the board, but it’s not always that easy: The board is part of a modular Billy unit with built-in cabinets and special customizations. Also, I want to follow the sustainability mindset and repair instead of throw away.

I recommend treating the surface with a degreasing cleaner to remove all traces of grease or dust.

I hadn’t considered that at all; I’ll definitely do that before ironing on the edge banding.

Thanks so much for the valuable tips so far! Does anyone have experience with special adhesives or sealants for laminate edges?

Yes, I have sometimes used PU glue on renovated furniture. It is flexible and adheres well to melamine resin-coated surfaces. It is important not to apply too much to avoid swelling.

For sealing: water-based clear varnish works well to protect the edges after gluing. Just apply a thin layer and let it dry thoroughly.

This has helped me several times to significantly improve durability.

To everyone experiencing problems with edge banding: it's worth smoothing the edges carefully with a router after ironing on the edge band.

This ensures that the edge bands adhere better and that no edges stick out, which also improves durability.

And always let the glued joint cool down completely before putting any load on the board.
