I was a bit puzzled by the primary energy demand in our thermal insulation certificate. Isn’t nearly 50 kWh/m2a (5.0 kWh/ft2 per year) somewhat high for a KfW55 house?

I also find it high. With a KfW 70 standard, I have a measured final energy demand of 9 kWh/m² (0.84 kWh/ft²) when not including my partially heated basement in the usable area.

Not world-class yet, but getting a bit closer to the goal. According to the structural engineer, the values can still improve somewhat once the specific brands/models of the heating and ventilation systems are entered (these are not yet 100% finalized).
