Hello everyone,

We are currently planning our dream home together with a building company. Since the budget does not allow for a garage right now and it will be built later, we are considering having the foundation for the garage included in the initial house construction.

When we asked whether the water and electricity connections for the garage could be tapped from the house and if the necessary cables could be installed at the same time, the builder said: "Separate connections must be laid from the street to the garage for its utilities."

Since I don’t quite understand this, I wanted to ask how you have handled this or if it is feasible to add these connections later on when the garage is eventually built.

Thank you in advance.

That’s nonsense. In almost every new build, the cable is first routed into the house to the main distribution board and from there it branches off to the garage.

If the cable runs directly from the street to the garage, you’ll need duplicate equipment there—meter, distribution board, etc.—and you will likely be charged connection fees twice.

I would simply have one cable installed; the main thing is that power is available at the intended location. Water is trickier since the connections need to match those of the garage later on. But at least the connection point can be brought “close by” here in advance.

Keep in mind the electrical connection for an electric vehicle. Install 5x6 or preferably 5x10 mm² (0.01x0.01 or 0.02x0.02 inches) cables. And yes, everything else has already been covered above.

Well, electricity shouldn’t be an issue; of course, you can run it from the house.
For water, and especially wastewater, it depends on the property and the location of the garage and the sewer system.
If the garage and house do not share a wall with water or wastewater connections, I consider the effort too high, as you don’t really need a water connection in the garage urgently.

Alternatively, you can later install a pipeline system, for example from Gardena, to run a line from the outdoor faucet. That’s how I have planned it for the future.

A water outlet below the outdoor faucet can be connected with a pipe leading into the garage. So, it’s just a matter of planning a conduit somewhere in the garage’s slab.

For electricity, we had a 5x6mm² (5x10 AWG) cable, 10m (33ft) long, run from the house back then. I then laid it myself under the base layer of the paving and came out later in a corner of the carport. I also installed an empty conduit at the same time—who knows what might be needed there later?!
