Hello everyone,

I hope someone can help me. My family and I have purchased a multi-family house built in 1963, which we completely renovated (windows, gas heating, full external insulation, etc.). It has a total of two floors plus a converted attic. Currently, I am facing the problem that noise is transmitted through the chimneys from the "source" floor to the other floors. For example, if someone speaks a bit louder on the second floor, I can hear it through the chimney walls in the ground floor.

About the chimneys:

  • All three run from the basement up to the top.
  • One is connected to the gas heating system.
  • The second passes through the living rooms; there is a wood stove connected to it on the second floor.
  • The third is unused.

All chimneys are built of masonry, and the floors are made of concrete, with fleece screed applied on top.

My questions:

1. Has anyone had similar problems? If yes, what measures did you take?

2. Which type of specialist is best to consult in such cases?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,
be glad that you don’t live in a multi-family house because that would be really unpleasant. If you only have one pipe, it is clear that sound will travel everywhere. This is hardly avoidable, but it is definitely annoying if you can hear it throughout the house.

Hi, this is a difficult issue that you should discuss with the heating engineer. It is definitely not a good solution to seal any of the openings. Especially if the gas heating system is connected, this could be dangerous. Even if you receive good advice, make sure to consult a professional!!!

Hello,

thanks for the tips so far. The chimney that the gas heating system runs through is less of a problem; the heating engineer installed a pipe going upwards there, which apparently reduces the noise somewhat. I am more concerned about the other two issues, but I think I will contact the heating engineer and the chimney sweep.
