Our long-term tenant of a single-family house managed to scratch both lids and now even the side of the new powder-coated trash bin enclosure within just 14 days. At 1,600 euros, this is frustrating, and he also made negative comments about the cleaning effort.

Now, the house is going to receive new windows, a front door, and a side entrance door. The two aluminum doors cost 13,000 euros, and my question is whether I should avoid powder coating and opt for a matte paint finish instead, as it might be easier to repaint?

Crystal ball says: The powder coating was a fashionable matte dark gray with a textured "sand" surface. These surfaces have exactly these problems regardless of how they are made or marketed.

Suggestion:
Definitely go with powder coating but avoid the "sand texture" and matte finish. That way, everyone is happy.
In case of damage, a professional company can easily repaint the powder coating.
Painting is not as durable as powder coating.

Thank you, but there is only a limited selection. I consider high-gloss paint unsuitable. As I mentioned, the goal is also to be able to repair scratches more easily, so I was skeptical because of reports that powder coating is very difficult to touch up...

High gloss is (also) a very bad idea.
Between high gloss and (extra) matte, there are many other options.

In summary, finishes that are difficult to clean or repair are:
  • Matte and extra matte.
  • "Sand texture" or "satin" finishes (not smooth).
  • High gloss.
