p3terHello house building experts,
I am reaching out because I am currently in the position of having to/wanting to write a master’s thesis.
I am studying civil engineering with a focus on construction management.
My supervisor presented several possible topics, from which I was to choose one. This topic is not fixed and can still be modified.
I chose the topic "Energy-Optimized Building Services - Identifying Different Efficiency Levels".
After extended research, I have unfortunately not made much progress yet. I would like to narrow down the topic significantly, as it is still very general and I do not know where to start. I want to focus primarily on heat generation!
Now my question to you:
What do you think would be a meaningful way to narrow down the topic? What is interesting and has not yet been extensively covered?
Thank you in advance for your expert opinions!

Hello,
Since it is about energy, however, considering the utilization rate or the annual performance factor of heat pumps seems much more meaningful, as the efficiency ratio always represents only an instantaneous power-related snapshot. Both values can be standardized using the heat generator performance factor.
It is strongly recommended to study DIN 4701, especially parts -10, 4108-6, and 832.
Best regards.

I decided on the topic "Energy-Optimized Building Services Engineering – Identifying Different Efficiencies".

p3ter schrieb:You could concentrate on one type of heat generator, for example heat pumps, as they are gaining increasing importance. There is material here for several theses ;-) Maybe you could find a mentor from the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) field.
...What do you think would be a sensible narrowing of the topic? What is interesting and has not yet been extensively discussed?

Hello everyone,
unfortunately, I haven’t made much progress on the topic yet.
I just can’t seem to get to the core of the subject.
Important questions for me are:
What is currently relevant and interesting in building services engineering?
How can this be linked to economic considerations?
What is feasible within the scope of a master’s thesis? (80-100 pages)
Best regards,
Peter

Hello,
I don't mean to be pedantic, but shouldn't you have thought about this before finalizing your topic with your professor?
Regards

I don’t want to sound pedantic, but shouldn’t you have thought about it before setting your topic with your professor? I went and was allowed to choose one topic out of about 15. I chose the one mentioned above because it seemed the most interesting to me. Nothing is lost yet! The project isn’t registered yet!
Hello everyone,
a brief update on my master’s thesis: I have discarded the old topic and gathered new topic proposals:
• Certification labels as indicators of sustainability in real estate – a critical analysis
• Attractiveness of sustainable (existing) buildings from an investor’s perspective (building services engineering, image (increased comfort), etc.)
• Marketing strategies in the real estate sector (positioning a reference building in the market, identifying suitable users and investors)
• Examining the reduction of performance indicators across different trades (earthworks, masonry, concrete work, reinforcement work, etc.) under various conditions (precipitation, temperature, wind/storm) → recording change order figures
• Analysis of the learning curve effect: identifying dependencies between performance indicators and repetition frequency (floors → dependency on height, precast element installation...)
• Comparison of theoretical versus actual equipment performance – BGL versus construction site
What do you think about these topics? I am currently doing some preliminary reading but expect that choosing a topic will not be easy.
Best regards
