Hello everyone, I urgently need advice: I own an IKEA Malm bed that recently suffered water damage because a pipe burst in the bedroom. The furniture is made of particleboard with a laminate surface – now there are bubbles and waves on several areas of the surface, and the edges have swollen.

My question is: How can I properly repair the Malm furniture after water damage to make the damage as invisible as possible while maintaining stability? Are there special methods to remove moisture, reseal the surface, or repair damaged laminate?

I would like to know which materials and tools are truly effective and whether I should use specific adhesives or fillers. Also, I’m interested in how to replace or salvage the damaged particleboard without completely disassembling the furniture.

Thank you in advance for your tips and experiences!

If it has swollen, you can sometimes smooth it out using a small soldering iron and a flat metal plate, provided you have some experience.

Thanks for the tip! That sounds like a delicate method that I would probably leave to a professional. Are there special repair films that can be applied if the original film is beyond repair?

For gluing or reapplying the film on repaired areas, please use a special contact adhesive that is waterproof.

Can you provide any specific product recommendations? Also, is it possible to neatly work such a film around corners and edges, or would it be better to paint instead?

By the way, the furniture is in a bedroom with moderate humidity. I will definitely prioritize drying and have already arranged a dehumidifier.
