ᐅ MALM Furniture After Water Damage – How to Professionally Repair It?

jere63Hello everyone, I urgently need advice: I own an IKEA Malm bed that recently suffered water damage because a pipe burst in the bedroom. The furniture is made of particleboard with a laminate surface – now there are bubbles and waves on several areas of the surface, and the edges have swollen.
My question is: How can I properly repair the Malm furniture after water damage to make the damage as invisible as possible while maintaining stability? Are there special methods to remove moisture, reseal the surface, or repair damaged laminate?
I would like to know which materials and tools are truly effective and whether I should use specific adhesives or fillers. Also, I’m interested in how to replace or salvage the damaged particleboard without completely disassembling the furniture.
Thank you in advance for your tips and experiences!

First, it is important to allow the piece of furniture to dry completely. Then, sand swollen areas with fine sandpaper. For surface repairs, there are repair kits available with wood filler and matching veneers. If the chipboard is severely damaged, replacement is the only solution.
Hello jere63, I’m happy to provide you with a structured approach:
1. Drying phase: Place the furniture in a well-ventilated, warm area. A dehumidifier can help remove moisture from the wood faster. The drying time may take several days – it is important not to apply direct heat sources to chipboard (particleboard) to avoid warping.
2. Assessing the damage: Check whether the laminate surface is still intact or if the chipboard core has been damaged by water. Cracked or swollen edges often require replacing severely swollen chipboard cores.
3. Sanding and repairing: After drying, gently sand the surface to reduce any unevenness. Then fill any imperfections with wood filler suitable for chipboard. Important: do not use filler that is too wet.
4. Surface sealing: Once dry, you can either cover the furniture with special furniture adhesive foil or seal it with clear varnish (preferably water-based) to restore moisture protection.
5. Replacing damaged parts: If chipboard is severely swollen, it is advisable to completely replace the affected parts. For MALM furniture, you may be able to remove the damaged parts and order matching replacements or cut new parts yourself.
Make sure to use the correct sandpaper grit throughout the process (start with coarse, then fine).
These steps will help minimize further damage and preserve the appearance as much as possible. Good luck!

I would add that direct sunlight or intense heat should be avoided, as this can cause cracking. If only the surface of the board is damp, gently blotting it with a dry cloth can help.

4. Surface sealing: After drying, you can either cover the furniture with a special adhesive furniture film or seal it with clear varnish (preferably water-based) to restore moisture protection.Personally, I would recommend sealing with varnish because film often peels off at the edges, especially after water damage. It’s important to apply multiple thin layers and allow each layer to dry thoroughly in between.
Regarding the film: if it has swollen, it can sometimes be smoothed out with a small soldering iron and a flat metal plate, provided you have experience.
If you like, I can prepare a step-by-step guide for you.
Here is an important technical note regarding particleboard:
After water damage, particleboard swells significantly due to absorbed moisture, especially at edges and areas where the melamine or foil surface coating is damaged. In MALM furniture, the surface is usually made of melamine resin-coated particleboard, which can be damaged by penetrating water.
A proper repair involves two main steps:
1. Complete drying (using a dehumidifier and possibly some air circulation, ideally over several days)
2. Mechanical treatment: removing the swollen edges with a sharp cutter and sanding the cut areas to an even thickness.
When gluing or reapplying the foil on repaired areas, use a special contact adhesive that is waterproof. This is important because standard adhesives are often not water-resistant enough.
Additionally, you can use waterproof wood filler to fill small uneven spots. For extensive damage to the particleboard, replacement is recommended.
Tip: Always wear dust protection when sanding, as fine dust from particleboard can be harmful to health.
