Hello everyone,
we have purchased a plot in the northern Upper Palatinate (Bavaria). This plot is about 200 sqm (2,150 sq ft) and is located in a holiday home village.
We want to build a log house on it, with timber walls 16 or 20 cm (6 or 8 inches) thick, according to the local development plan. There are two house sizes available (A: 8 x 5.50 m (26 x 18 ft), B: 9 x 5 m (30 x 16 ft)). Both houses have a standard gable roof and two floors (the upper floor has a roof slope of 30 degrees).
Our questions:
- Who can give us general advice on choosing a "good supplier"? (There are so many providers, for example from Russia, Poland, and elsewhere.)
- What is the approximate total cost of such a house at the end, if you don’t do too much work yourself?
Thank you

Don Esteban30 Jun 2020 10:45I need to add a few more details. I am building in Portugal, so not with the German construction company. There were also “reliability issues” with the local representative here beforehand, as well as some statements that later turned out to be false.
In February, I spoke by phone with the CEO and owner of Norges Hus, Andreas R. (I’m not sure if real names are allowed here). He promised me a personal visit since he often travels to Portugal and northern Spain. Despite about 10 follow-ups, this never happened. Although he was frequently in Portugal and Spain, he never made it to see me. By the way, I am building a large house of almost 300 sqm (3,230 sq ft), so I should be a customer worth visiting. There were also no callbacks or messages/excuses.
We plan to do all the construction ourselves with my civil engineer on site. Only the house package, including transport and assembly, would come from Norges Hus. Andreas R. promised that his team from Estonia would travel here and build the house. My engineer in Portugal has told me the quality is good, at least from what he can judge. We even visited a site locally when they were setting one up.
That’s where things stand now. The contract is in place. However, everything now feels too uncertain. I will probably bite the bullet and start planning completely anew. Better to face a quick end with pain than an endless, drawn-out nightmare.
By the way, when calling in Estonia, all phone numbers lead directly to Andreas R.’s mobile phone. There is no call center. According to an online search, Norges Hus in Estonia had revenues of 3.2 million USD in 2018 with 8 employees. Unfortunately, I no longer have the link, but it should be easy to look up yourself.
