Hello

maybe someone has already dealt with the following topic:

My outdoor cameras are powered via PoE. I would like to install a surge protector to prevent my PoE switch in the patch panel from being damaged.

Since there is no grounding/equipotential bonding near the cameras, I thought the following: I will buy an RJ45 surge protector and install it directly in the patch panel, where I do have grounding/equipotential bonding. Would that even be effective if lightning strikes, since it is very close to the switch? In other words: Is a surge protector only effective if installed near the “source” (camera)?

Maybe someone has experience with this ;-)

Thanks

Very sensible. We also have several outdoor PoE cameras and use the following protection: ALLNET ALL95112

I also got the Allnet (95100). Where did you install it? Right at or just after the camera?

Best regards

Surge protection starts at the meter cabinet. Next to the main switch is the surge protection module. This is mandatory for every new installation. The downstream components then provide fine protection for particularly sensitive devices.
