Hello everyone,

Our future house is located on a meadow, but the grass growing there is rather coarse now (I believe it was previously pasture land). What is the best approach after the house is completed? Does the old topsoil need to be replaced, or can new grass simply be sown on the existing soil? If so, how do you remove the old grass?

Is this something that can easily be done as a DIY project, or will I need an excavator, low-loader, and more manpower?

Good luck

Remove the old lawn completely, add new topsoil, and lay new grass. Carefully dig out every single weed that starts to grow 🙂

This works very well with a spade and some manpower (or womanpower), depending on the size of the area. A skid-steer loader, excavator, or similar equipment can, of course, significantly ease the work.

Hello,
Excavators, wheel loaders, and similar equipment probably depend on the size.
Isn’t it enough to just dig over the soil once, rake it smooth, lay new turf, and mow regularly?

It depends on whether you want a lawn or a meadow. For us, it’s impossible to establish a weed-free lawn from scratch because the new development area used to be millet fields, and the seeds are extremely persistent.
So, the only option was to use turf rolls.

Hello,
well, I don’t need a perfect golf green, but I also don’t want a complete weed patch.
Turf would probably be a good solution.
It’s probably just a matter of cost.

Sod is the easiest and most reliable option. Please leave some space next to the lawn in the garden for nature and native species.
