Hello,
We have a large meadow behind the house that we want to leave entirely natural. We want everything to grow as nature allows. However, it should be mowed once a year. Is it better to use a lawn mower or a scythe for this? Who has experience with this and can tell me which is easier to use?

If the meadow is only going to be mowed once a year, then using a lawn mower is not an option. The grass will be too tall, and you will never get through it. A scythe is a better choice, but you need to practice. There is a specific technique required, otherwise it won’t work.
Hello,
There are also mowers that can handle tall grass, but they are quite expensive. It is much better to learn to mow with a scythe. Maybe you know someone who can show you how to do it. It’s also a great fitness exercise, and once you’ve mastered it, it becomes very quick.

We have a similar situation behind our house, and I have to say: we use both. The tall grass and brush near the fence are cut with a scythe, sometimes with our gas-powered trimmer, and then the rest is finished off with the lawn mower – so it’s definitely useful to have both at home. 😉

Hello
If you want to have a truly natural meadow, mowing it just once a year is questionable. Many plants cannot withstand this treatment and will eventually die out over the years.
It is also advisable to cut the meadow only with a scythe or a sickle bar mower. The scythe cut does not go as deep or as cleanly as a lawn mower. The grass stems generally remain longer, which better preserves the natural meadow. The sickle bar mower is recommended for larger meadows since using a scythe is only easy if you have mastered it, whereas with a sickle bar mower, it’s hard to go wrong.
In any case, the most cost-effective option is the scythe. It is relatively inexpensive and only powered by muscle strength 😉 For a natural meadow, it also makes the most sense to mow with a scythe =).
Best regards, Förster
