Hello everyone,
maybe someone here can give us a good tip, as we are quite uncertain about a ventilation system.
We are planning to build a house (solid construction) according to KfW 70 standards, with underfloor heating, a fireplace, and a solar system. That much is already decided.
We received an offer from Company A for a ventilation system with heat recovery, and the salesperson recommended it to us.
At Company B, the ventilation system is significantly more expensive, and the salesperson told us that since the house is so well insulated, moisture would not be an issue... where would it come from? The rest could be regulated by normal airing anyway.
(I also think he realized that his ventilation system would have blown our budget and now I worry that he advised us against it just for that reason!)
My husband and I are laypersons, but my instinct tells me that the better the house is insulated, the more problems I would have getting rid of moisture and stale air inside the house, right?
After all, a blower door test does show that there is very little air circulation.
Am I completely wrong?
We are a bit torn now, since such a system is not exactly cheap! But is it necessary, or just a nice extra?
Thank you very much for your help!

Yeah, I agree.
If the house smells like cat feces and opening the windows lets in traffic noise, children shouting, exhaust fumes, and dirt, it definitely makes a case for a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery.A friend of mine has a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery and gets annoyed every time the farmer next door spreads manure on the fields... Then he ends up with all that smell inside the house! Because of the mechanical ventilation system... Without it, you have fewer problems in such situations. It's just as problematic when the neighbors light their wood stove under certain weather conditions... That creates quite a strong odor too... Closed windows are still the best defense against outdoor smells, especially if there’s no one around to switch off the ventilation when the outside air is unpleasant.

Hi
It might be possible to use activated carbon filters to reduce odors from outside. For my central controlled ventilation system with heat recovery, such a filter is offered as an accessory. Whether it is necessary will be seen in the future, as the building is not yet finished.

A controlled residential ventilation system can be turned off in such situations! There are timer settings and so on, so that’s not really a valid argument.
Besides, when I look at what the filter extracts, those odors just come through when airing out naturally.
For me: never without it again.

We also debated for a long time back and forth (KfW70 house). In the end, we decided against it.

You can achieve this of course through proper maintenance and cleaning, but those are costs we did not want to bear (a professional cleaning reportedly costs over 1000 Euros)..
