ᐅ Kallax: What to do when the shelves start to sag?

Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Kallax shelf unit that I have been using for about two years. Recently, I have noticed that the shelves—the insertable shelves—are becoming increasingly saggy, meaning they are less stable and bend slightly when I place items on them. In my opinion, the load is not excessive; I store books, binders, and a few decorative items.

I am interested in learning about options to stabilize or replace these sagging shelves. Are there practical tips to extend the lifespan of the shelves without having to replace the entire unit? Maybe material upgrades, reinforcements, or replacement products?

I look forward to your experiences and suggestions.

The braces are screwed under the shelf, yes.

Before recommending screws and modifications to the carcass, I believe one should consider whether this might compromise the overall stability of the entire shelving unit.

An alternative I often prefer is to use custom-cut panels made from MDF or plywood instead of standard shelves and place them in without any fastening. This way, the carcass remains intact and you can easily swap the shelves if needed.

Also, it is often overlooked how important load distribution is. Small, point loads are more likely to cause sagging than a load spread evenly across the surface.

The topic of load and stabilization is well addressed.

I recommend the following practical approach:
- Replace the shelves with 18 mm (0.7 inch) thick MDF or plywood panels cut to size to minimize natural deflection under load.
- Use support battens made of sturdy wood (e.g., pine) along the long sides to increase the bearing surface and thus improve load capacity.
- Avoid point loads by distributing heavy objects evenly.

This way, the shelf frame remains undamaged and the effect is long-lasting.
