ᐅ KALLAX painted after a kids’ birthday – how to repaint it?

Hello everyone,

After the last kids' birthday party, I noticed that my KALLAX shelf from Ikea was completely covered in paint—probably more by accident than as an art project ;-) Now I’m wondering how to repaint it so that the surface becomes smooth and durable again, especially since the shelf only has a thin melamine coating and the paint is difficult to remove.

Does anyone have experience with how to best prepare, sand, or clean melamine surfaces before repainting? And which types of paint or spray work well on this material without peeling or looking bad?

I’d appreciate any help and tips on suitable products!

Do you think spray paint is more advisable than a brush for my KALLAX shelf?

The advantage of spray paint is an even coat without brush marks, which is ideal for decorative surfaces. However, spraying requires some experience to avoid drips – applying thin layers is key.

Do you think that is absolutely necessary?

A clear coat significantly increases scratch and impact resistance, especially for frequently used furniture like shelves. It is therefore highly recommended if you want to enjoy the new surface for a long time.
