Hello everyone,
After the last kids' birthday party, I noticed that my KALLAX shelf from Ikea was completely covered in paint—probably more by accident than as an art project ;-) Now I’m wondering how to repaint it so that the surface becomes smooth and durable again, especially since the shelf only has a thin melamine coating and the paint is difficult to remove.
Does anyone have experience with how to best prepare, sand, or clean melamine surfaces before repainting? And which types of paint or spray work well on this material without peeling or looking bad?
I’d appreciate any help and tips on suitable products!

Hello rutape,
The first step is usually to thoroughly clean the painted areas to remove grease and dirt. Then, you should lightly sand the surface using very fine sandpaper (grit 220-300) to slightly roughen the melamine coating so the paint can adhere properly.
For painting, special primers designed for plastic/melamine are recommended to ensure good adhesion. After applying the primer, you can use a water-based or acrylic paint. Make sure the paint is suitable for furniture and is durable. Spray paint is convenient if you want to cover the surface evenly.
Important: Apply several thin layers instead of one thick layer, and allow the shelf to dry thoroughly between coats.

Hello and good day,
here is a brief guide on how to restore your KALLAX shelf:
1. Cleaning: It’s best to use a microfiber cloth and a mild cleaner (isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol works well) to remove all oils and waxes.
2. Sanding: Use sandpaper with a grit of 240 to 320, lightly sand over the painted surfaces to improve paint adhesion. Avoid sanding too hard to prevent damaging the surface.
3. Priming: A bonding primer designed for plastic-like surfaces is important. This ensures good adhesion between the melamine and the paint.
4. Painting: For furniture, I recommend water-based acrylic paints or special furniture paints. A fine brush or spray can achieve good results.
5. Finishing: After the paint has dried, you can apply a clear coat for protection – matte or glossy, depending on your preference.
Common mistakes include applying paint too thickly, insufficient preparation, or skipping the primer.
Good luck!

Primer: A bonding primer for plastic-like surfaces is important.I can confirm this. Without a bonding primer, paint usually does not adhere well to melamine.
First, lightly sand, then apply primer, then paint. Done.

Additionally, allow sufficient drying time to prevent any stickiness or uneven finish.

Make sure the paint for furniture is durable. Thanks, that’s a good tip.
What do you think—is spray paint more advisable than a brush for my KALLAX shelf? I’m worried that a brush might leave streaks, but spray paint could drip easily, right?

After the paint has dried, you can apply a clear coat for protectionIn your opinion, is that absolutely necessary? How much does a clear coat actually improve the durability of melamine-coated furniture after repainting?
