Hello everyone, I have a Kallax shelving unit and am currently considering whether the feet can be permanently attached using fabric tape. My specific question is: How long do Kallax feet actually hold up in practice when fixed only with fabric tape? I want to know if fabric tape is a reliable solution that can support the weight steadily over weeks or months, or if it should rather be seen as a temporary fix. Are there any experiences regarding how the fabric tape behaves under load and in everyday use, especially concerning wear or loosening? Thank you very much for all your assessments and tips.
I would like to add a note about safety: Kallax furniture is generally not designed to support high loads on taped feet. There is a significant risk that the fabric tape will fail, which can lead to tipping or falling hazards. Therefore, if someone actually attaches feet using fabric tape, they should avoid placing heavy items on it or moving the shelf. For a permanent solution, there are affordable original feet with screw threads available that are safer and do not compromise the structure. Better safe than sorry.
One additional note: the durability of fastening with cloth tape greatly depends on the type of tape used. Chalktex or similar strong cloth tapes last longer but are still not designed to bear loads. A fundamental issue is that while the tensile strength may be good, the shear forces and constant stress from movement and load cause the adhesive to weaken. Furthermore, temperature and humidity inside the room can reduce adhesion. I also recommend the following approach: 1. Clean the feet thoroughly 2. Use high-quality cloth tape 3. Distribute the load as evenly as possible and minimize weight 4. Regularly inspect and replace the tape. This way, if the original solution is not available, a fairly stable fastening can be achieved temporarily.
