ᐅ Is it possible to cheaply expand Ikea PLATSA units using leftover wood?

Hello everyone,

I am considering supplementing my Ikea Platsa system with leftover wood to save costs while adding a personal touch. My main question is: Is it practical and, above all, cost-effective to expand or modify PLATSA components using self-cut or leftover wood? I am particularly interested in how well the material Ikea uses can be combined with other types of wood, whether the stability is affected, and which tools or methods are recommended when planning such combinations.

Has anyone had experience with this and can provide insights or advice? I want to build affordably but also maintain quality.

"Grinding down" works, but it only makes sense for corrections of a few millimeters and should be done very carefully.

I can only agree with that. Anyone who thinks they can just grind away 2 cm (1 inch) of excess wood and have it fit is mistaken. This usually leads to rough edges and weaker joints.

If possible, I would prefer to select leftover wood that already fits or cut the pieces precisely from the start. It’s better to use a suitable circular saw or, even better if available, a stationary saw.

The extra material and time investment pays off when you value long-term stability.

If you ever feel frustrated because something doesn’t fit or you’re worried it might be too complicated: stick with it, it’s worth it.

I also experienced a few setbacks, but the personal learning curve and the satisfaction with the result made it all worthwhile.

Maybe for starters, you could consider smaller accents or additions, such as shelves made from leftover wood, before building larger components.
