Hello everyone,

Attached directly to a fully renovated house (windows, external thermal insulation composite system) is a garage, and one floor below is the former oil tank room. The house is insulated with 120mm (5 inches) styrofoam ETICS with a thermal conductivity of WLG 035.

Now I would like to insulate the wall in the former oil tank room as well, then reinforce it and plaster it. The wall is about 2.5 x 4m (8.2 x 13.1 ft), cleaned, dry, and especially free of dirt. It was plastered by myself about 40 years ago and is therefore slightly uneven.

I want to insulate this wall on my own since the small room doesn’t need to look perfect. It should just be functional and easy to manage. Different craftsmen from various trades gave me different advice. For example, I was recommended to use rigid foam boards with adhesive mortar. I was told I could apply the adhesive mortar rather thickly behind the boards to compensate for unevenness. No additional mechanical fastening of the boards would be necessary. Then fill the joints with PU foam, cut it flush after curing, and finally embed a reinforcing mesh in the plaster.

What would you recommend? Should I proceed like this and, if so, with which products? Or am I completely off track?

Thanks and best regards,
Domi
