Hello everyone,

I need your help. Two companies/installers have now stood me up, so I’m doing it myself. Here is the situation: a tiled platform between the bathtub and the walk-in shower. A glass partition wall is to be installed on the platform. The wall has an embedded channel that holds the glass partition. The channel has a width of 12mm (0.5 inches).

My idea is to order a glass panel with a 12mm (0.5 inches) thickness, leave a few millimeters of space at the top (in height) to compensate for any unevenness of the platform, and seal it with silicone. Additionally, I plan to install a cross rail for stability. Or am I missing something? I can simply place the glass panel on the platform, right?

I already spoke to an online supplier; the lady said I could also order a 10mm (0.4 inches) thick panel, which would be cheaper (polished edges are basically a must). But 2mm (0.08 inches) clearance in the channel seems like a lot to me.

Good luck

Michael

So, on the pedestal, you can also place the glass pane on silicone wedges and then seal it with silicone. A 12mm (1/2 inch) pane with a 12mm (1/2 inch) rail? I would be cautious because if the rail has even a small dent, it could cause problems. I would at least test beforehand with a 12mm (1/2 inch) sample piece to see if it fits cleanly into the rail everywhere. Do you have a crossbar planned at the top?

Hi,

the tip about the silicone wedges is a good one! That's how I'll do it. If the 12mm (0.5 inch) doesn’t fit, I can also use them for the track if needed. Then 10mm (0.4 inch) washers, insert wedges, and seal it. Thanks to you.

I installed a shower enclosure measuring 2 x 1.40 m (4 ft 7 in x 4 ft 7 in) in the same way with an acquaintance; it also has a crossbar at the top. These silicone wedges are great for the bottom. I believe we used a 10mm (0.4 inch) glass panel in a 12mm (0.5 inch) channel. You can’t see it after grouting! Depending on the size of the glass pane, make sure to use suction cups for transport.

I will do it—thank you very much. Do you perhaps have a tip on where I can get these wedges? Google provides very limited results on this...

A 12 mm (0.47 inch) glass pane in a 12 mm (0.47 inch) frame is not only extremely difficult to install, but such a tight fit can also cause stress in the glass, which may lead to cracking. Allowing some clearance for movement is important.
