Hello everyone,

I have already searched extensively but haven’t found answers to my questions yet, so I’m starting a new topic here.

We are in the process of converting a "storage room" in the basement into a cozy living space that will serve as a guest room and for game nights with friends, as well as for using the exercise bike, playing music... in short, for anything that should take place a bit apart from possibly sleeping children.

We would like to visually divide the room using an open shelving unit. The problem is that we only have about 30 cm (12 inches) of depth available for this room divider, so Expedit and Besta do not fit.

I had the idea to repurpose Billy for this purpose, as its depth is almost ideal.

BUT:
Do you know if the edges of the shelves are fully laminated/sealed, or would you be able to see the inside of the particleboard from the back? I have read that the back panels are quite important for the stability of Billy. If you screw the first unit to the wall sideways and then attach the second one to the first—does anyone have experience whether this will be stable enough?
There would be about 7 cm (3 inches) of space between Billy and the ceiling (the floor isn’t installed yet, but this should be the final measurement), so screwing it to the ceiling is not an option...

I would appreciate any advice or experiences you can share!

Thanks and best regards,

Hello,
take a look at the assembly instructions. There you can see that the base has a cutout at the back for the skirting board and is only covered at the front. If you leave out the back panel, a groove remains where the exposed particleboard is visible. The drawings also show that the back edges of the shelves do not have edge banding.
The back panel only provides lateral stability (similar to the Pax back panel), so in this respect, a proper screwing of a side panel to the wall is sufficient. However, if the shelf extends far into the room, there may be a risk of parts of the shelf being pulled down. I would recommend additionally securing it to the ceiling. 7 cm (3 inches) is not much. You can probably find suitable materials at the hardware store. There are shelving systems, similar to Broder, with posts that are tensioned between floor and ceiling. Something like that should be available for ceiling mounting.

The Expedit shelving unit can be placed freely within a room, as it looks the same from all sides equally!

The assembly instructions are now usually available for download on the product pages of the website.
Take a close look at EXPEDIT. It feels very solid, but the components are hollow inside, similar in construction to most interior doors nowadays.

Thank you both for the tips and suggestions!

We will take a closer look at Expedit and then think it over further. Maybe we will come up with a completely different creative solution, or we might actually use a system that can be tensioned between floor and ceiling...
