Hello everyone,

I am planning to use a Billy shelf unit from IKEA and would like to know the load capacity of the individual shelves. Specifically, I am interested in how much weight a single shelf can hold without bending or breaking.

I understand that the load capacity also depends on the intended use and how the shelves are fixed in place, so it would be great if you could share examples or experiences – especially regarding shelves that are suitable not only for books but also for heavier items like boxes or equipment.

Thanks in advance!

Data sheet information ... shows that this load limit is appropriate.

I can confirm that. What I would personally add: If the BILLY shelf is attached to the wall and the back panel is sturdy, the allowable load can be used more efficiently.

With freestanding shelves, caution is advised – the load capacity may be somewhat lower in that case.

Overall, I recommend regularly checking the stress points (warping, creaking) for shelves loaded with more than 25 kg (55 lbs). This helps to avoid unexpected problems.
