ᐅ How can I prevent the shelves from sagging on a Billy bookcase?

Hello everyone, I have a specific question about the shelves in IKEA Billy units: How can I prevent the shelves from sagging when I load them with quite heavy items? I understand that the standard shelves have a limited load capacity, but I am looking for practical and cost-effective ways to sustainably increase stability and load-bearing capacity – without having to replace the shelves entirely. What experiences have you had? Are there proven reinforcements, inserts, or other solutions that effectively prevent sagging without affecting the appearance or functionality of the shelf?

I’m curious: What specific loads are you planning to place on the shelves?

Thank you for your detailed response, FAZAR! I mainly plan to store books and binders on the shelves, which typically amounts to about 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs) per shelf. The load is not extreme but is fairly evenly distributed. I also expect moderate usage and want to avoid visible sagging of the shelves. A central support is generally not an option for me because of the appearance. Could you possibly give an assessment of whether adding metal brackets underneath the shelf would make a noticeable difference?

Yes, attaching a U-shaped metal profile made of aluminum or steel under the shelf board significantly increases bending stiffness. Statistically, you can reduce the maximum deflection by about 50%. It is important that the profile is cut precisely to the length of the shelf and securely screwed in place. This solution saves space and minimally affects the appearance, while providing a good load-bearing capacity increase without visible center supports. For your loads of 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs) per board, I would definitely recommend this.

It is also important that the shelf is properly aligned. If it is installed crooked, no reinforcement will prevent it from bending.

I can understand how annoying sagging shelves can be, especially when storing valuable books. What helped me a lot was installing an additional cross beam under each shelf. It doesn’t look quite as elegant, but now I feel much more confident that nothing will bend or sag. Maybe this could be an option for you as well—especially if you prioritize functionality over pure aesthetics.

Great thread here! 🙂 I think it’s awesome how many useful tips have already been shared! I had the same problem myself and simply used a thin plywood sheet as a temporary floor, reinforcing it with a self-made metal strip – it helped a lot. The great thing is that the metal strip distributes the weight really well. If you do this, you won’t have to worry about sagging anymore! Good luck with it! ;-)
