Hello everyone,

I am planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island myself, but I’m not exactly sure how to proceed. My main questions are:
- Which modules are best suited for an island?
- How exactly do you connect the cabinets securely to prevent the island from wobbling?
- Are there any special tips for installing the countertop on the island, especially for larger formats?
- And finally, what do I need to consider when installing the sink and cooktop if the island is to have water and electrical connections?

I have done some research already, but practical advice from experienced DIY kitchen builders would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

About the corner brackets: They are the most practical solution to securely connect Metod cabinets for an island. Since IKEA does not offer special island connectors, I recommend using galvanized steel brackets, which are screwed inside the cabinets. Alternatively, wooden strips can be mounted on the back to also provide a firm connection.

Regarding invisible connections: The brackets should only be attached in a way that they are not visible from the outside— for example, inside the cabinet sides or behind panels. For appearance and function, countersunk screws and, if necessary, sanding down any minor unevenness before final assembly are recommended.

About water and electricity: When installing, it is essential to ensure proper sealing and compliance with local regulations. Lines routed through the island must be easily accessible and protected against moisture. Sink connections should be linked with flexible hoses to compensate for installation errors or shifts. Installing shut-off valves within the island can also be useful.
