Hello everyone,

I am planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island myself, but I’m not exactly sure how to proceed. My main questions are:
- Which modules are best suited for an island?
- How exactly do you connect the cabinets securely to prevent the island from wobbling?
- Are there any special tips for installing the countertop on the island, especially for larger formats?
- And finally, what do I need to consider when installing the sink and cooktop if the island is to have water and electrical connections?

I have done some research already, but practical advice from experienced DIY kitchen builders would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Regarding stability: IKEA Metod carcasses are designed for upright wall cabinets, so it is advisable to screw the island frames together additionally. Corner brackets or wooden battens on the back help to firmly connect the modules and stabilize the entire unit.

For selection: Drawer base cabinets (60 or 80 cm (24 or 32 inches) wide) are generally well suited for islands. Open shelving is practical for side panels. Keep in mind that islands have no backs, so pay attention to frontal and lateral stabilization.

Countertop: For lengths over 2 meters (6.5 feet), support battens should be installed underneath the countertop to prevent sagging.

Electrical/plumbing: Connections should preferably be planned in advance by a professional and installed in the floor or wall. Routing through the carcasses requires cutouts in the back panels.

Screw the cabinet carcasses together using connectors to ensure stability. Support the countertop with battens to prevent sagging. Plan plumbing and electrical installations in advance, otherwise it will become problematic.

Hello Nikisan,

I would like to add that building a Metod island mainly depends on precise planning. Start by accurately measuring the layout of your planned island. Then decide which cabinets you need – the functions (storage, appliances, sink) play an important role here.

If you want to integrate water and electricity into the island, definitely seek professional help for the installation. The plumbing and wiring should be safe and accessible, but the modules must not become unstable because of it.

When assembling, you can use IKEA-specific screws, as the cabinet boxes already have pre-drilled holes. However, it is advisable to also use wooden dowels or metal brackets to create a tight, sturdy connection. This prevents doors and drawers from sticking later on.

Finally, you should secure the countertop with special clamps, especially for large island countertops.

I hope this helps you get started! If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Mega project, Nikisan! Building the IKEA Metod kitchen island yourself is definitely doable! 😊

Important: Don’t be afraid of the connections! If you plan everything carefully, it will work out great. My tip: Make a detailed plan in advance of everything you want to include (sink, cooktop, storage). That way, you can choose the right cabinets and look forward to the installation.

Assembling the cabinet boxes is easy, but take your time to align them properly. The countertop is the highlight – make sure to use good quality here and support it well!

I think a DIY project like this is a lot of fun, and in the end, you’ll have something of your own that fits perfectly! Good luck!!

That makes sense to me; I had suspected that. Are there specific connectors that have proven particularly reliable with IKEA Metod? I ask because I’m aiming not only for stability but also for as invisible connections as possible.

Could you please explain that in more detail? I’m not sure if there are special precautions to take when later connecting the island’s utilities to the regular hookups.

Thanks in advance for your tips!
