Hello everyone, I recently assembled several pieces of Ikea Hemnes furniture in the kids’ room, including cabinets and shelves made of solid pine wood with a light finish. Since these are light-colored, untreated wooden furniture, I’m a bit unsure about the best way to care for the Hemnes furniture in the children’s room to preserve the light color and wood grain over time. Specifically, I’m interested in how to clean them gently and effectively, which cleaning products are suitable or potentially harmful, and whether the furniture should be regularly oiled or waxed. Tips on preventing unsightly stains, such as from drinks or fingerprints, would also be very helpful. Does anyone have experience or recommendations? Thanks in advance!

How can I best remove stains from, for example, colored pencils or juice without damaging the surface? For colored pencil marks, you can carefully try to erase the stains with an eraser without rubbing. Alternatively, gently wiping with some water and mild dish soap often helps. For juice stains, it’s best to immediately wipe with a damp cloth and a small amount of soap. It is important not to rub hard to avoid damaging the finish.

What about the UV resistance of Hemnes – are there risks if the furniture is placed near a window? The light pine wood is sensitive to direct sunlight, which can cause yellowing over time. Therefore, it is advisable not to expose the furniture to direct sunlight for prolonged periods. Curtains or blinds can help prevent this. Overall, the finish provides good protection against moisture but does not protect against UV rays.
