Hello everyone,

I have some furniture from the Hemnes series by Ikea that I’d like to refresh with a new color. My question is: how can you update the Hemnes furniture so it looks more modern and personalized without completely losing its characteristic style? I’m thinking about different options like paints, stains, veneers, or combinations of these. What experiences have you had, and which techniques or materials work particularly well with the Hemnes series, which is usually made of pine or has a similar surface? Concrete tips and tricks would be great, and please keep in mind my limits regarding stability and durability. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

In addition to the previous posts, I would like to point out the option of furniture films and decorative films.

- They are easy to apply and come in a wide range of colors, including wood and metal finishes.
- The surface of Hemnes furniture is typically lacquered or waxed – a light cleaning and sanding beforehand is recommended.
- Make sure the film is cut to size and applied without air bubbles.

Another advantage: furniture films are reversible and do not damage the furniture surface if you want to revert the change later.

If you want a permanent solution, however, a combination of paint and sealant is usually recommended, since films can wear off quickly at the edges.

Summary: Paints, stains, chalk paint, and films are the most common options, depending on the desired durability and appearance.
