Hello everyone, I am considering repainting or redesigning my Ikea Brimnes furniture myself, as I no longer like the standard white look. My specific question is: What preparatory work is necessary on the BRIMNES furniture to achieve a painted surface that is durable and scratch-resistant? I have heard that the surface is not classic wood, but more like a foil – what is the best way to handle this? I am also interested in which paints or coatings work best for this, whether there are special primers needed, and if I require certain tools (sandpaper, spray cans, brushes, etc.). Additionally, it would be helpful if someone could share practical tips for creative redesigns beyond just painting, such as applying adhesive films or adding textures. I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello everyone,

I would like to add that especially with Brimnes, the edges and corners should be handled very carefully. These areas are often subject to greater wear and show signs of damage more quickly.

- Sand evenly without fail, avoiding the use of sanding blocks on edges to prevent rounding.
- Apply primer here in sufficient quantity.
- Additionally, the paint finish can be improved by sanding between coats with very fine sandpaper (400-600 grit).

- Clear lacquer (matte or satin) as a sealant can improve durability.

This can only be confirmed; sealing protects against scratches, moisture, and makes cleaning easier. Applying 2-3 coats is recommended.

Personally, I have also had good experiences with water-based paints, which have less odor and dry faster.
