Hello everyone, I am considering whether and how the Ikea Hemnes furniture piece, which is originally designed as a dresser or bed accessory, can be converted into a sofa bed. Specifically, I am interested in which components would need to be removed, reinforced, or added to create a comfortable sofa bed that can be used as seating during the day and as a sleeping surface at night. Does anyone have experience with this type of conversion, perhaps with advice on dimensions, materials used, or the required stability? I would appreciate a detailed guide, as I have some basic DIY skills but do not want to just experiment without a plan.

I generally doubt that you can turn a piece of furniture like the Hemnes series into a real sofa bed without making major structural modifications. The original design is optimized for shelving units and dressers, not for dynamic furniture like sofa beds. This means you would have to reinforce all the joints, integrate a new slatted bed base with a pull-out mechanism, and completely rebuild the upholstery.

While it may be appealing as a DIY project, economically you would be much better off with a purpose-built sofa bed. If you still want to convert it, you will need careful planning and, above all, acquire specialized knowledge in furniture construction.
