ᐅ How and where do you dry your laundry?

Fewer and fewer people are building basements under their houses.
Many prefer a separate utility room on the upper floor, where laundry is done – this room is usually limited to just a few square meters.
Most have to make do with a technical room of about 6 sqm (approximately 65 sq ft) – the typical size offered by most house builders – where there is barely enough space for one or two shelves plus a washing machine. The rest of the house is also tightly planned.

How do you manage your laundry drying? Especially in households with children, I think you really have to juggle things, right?

I currently dry my laundry on a drying rack in the hallway. Most of the time, I don’t even put the clothes away in the closet but wear them straight from the drying rack.
Just before there is nothing left on the rack, I do the laundry, then wear the rest of the clothes from the drying rack, hang up the wet laundry, and start again.
A perfect cycle.

Aren’t you ultimately drying your laundry with energy as well?

I was about to make the same point, but it only applies during the heating season. At all other times, the required heat is freely available, just like drying laundry outside. A controlled residential ventilation system with heat recovery (and moisture recovery) should practically balance this out.

Our laundry is hung under the covered multifunctional area, commonly known as a carport... yes, the car is usually parked in front of the covered multifunctional area.

Since I'm too lazy to hang laundry and don’t want to keep removing cat hair (from three long-haired tabbies), everything goes into the dryer. I love it. Without it, I would be desperate every time I have to get my child out of a wet bed after their nap. They like to cuddle with their milk bottle.

However, since my mother (a devoted outdoor hanger) saw how quickly the dryer works, she got one too.

In our current rental apartment, we wash clothes in the kitchen and dry them in the living room. I find that very annoying and unattractive. When the house planning starts, there is actually no dryer planned. A utility room is planned on the upper floor, where on one side there will be a washing machine (possibly slightly elevated), cabinets for cleaning supplies and a vacuum cleaner, and maybe some base cabinets. On the other side, there will be two fixed, wall-to-wall clotheslines installed at a higher level for long items like bed linens and sheets.

I prefer stiff towels and don’t like wearing clothes dried in a dryer. Using a dryer would only be an option for bed linens or if you urgently need something and forgot to wash it earlier.

In any case, I never want to see a drying rack again (except maybe outside in nice weather).

Old building, fully basemented – so drying takes place in the basement. Ventilation is not a problem even in winter.
