Hello,
we are already looking into the paving work (including graveling and paving the driveway). We need to use eco-friendly permeable paving and have heard different opinions regarding the gravel size. Some say that approximately 0-32mm (0-1.25 inches) is fine, while others believe that the smallest grain size should be 16mm (0.6 inches) to maintain permeability. In my opinion, such large gravel cannot be properly compacted, and wouldn’t the chippings applied on top just wash through? Does anyone have experience with permeable paving stones, and what did you use?
Best regards,
Sabine

I would also like to know if anyone verifies this or if I can just tell the municipality, "here, permeable paving, so I don’t have to pay stormwater fees."

Hello Curly
0 - 32mm (0 - 1¼ inches) is perfectly fine. You can compact it well, and it allows water to pass through easily. It is capillary-breaking.
Around here, limestone gravel is common. In the Hunsrück region, granite gravel is used. You should make sure the gravel has the shortest possible transport distance, as otherwise the cost increases significantly.
Try to get approval for the use of recycled crushed concrete (RCC). 0 - 48mm (0 - 1⅞ inches). This is crushed construction debris. It’s very cheap and widely available.
