ᐅ New Gas Heating System for a New Build – Is Solar Thermal Needed for Domestic Hot Water?

Good evening.

Does a new building with a gas heating system actually have to include solar thermal energy for both hot water and heating support, or is hot water alone sufficient? We plan to build with solid construction without external wall insulation. Additionally, we are considering a photovoltaic system. This should be more efficient than solar thermal for heating support, right?

Thank you

Alex, we simply disagree on this. I wish you a reliable, durable heat pump. And I hope you wish me a reliable, durable gas boiler. Ideally, it lasts 25 years, after which I’ll be in the cemetery anyway. Karsten

I’m quite uncertain now. Through various research, I found out that a newly built house with just a gas heating system is no longer acceptable. In other words, without solar panels, you apparently don’t meet the requirements.

As I said, we are building with solid 36.5cm (14.4 inches) T10 bricks, insulated ceiling and foundation slab. No underfloor heating.

Still, I’m unsure... should I consider consulting an external energy advisor?

Yes, you need a renewable energy share. Solar thermal systems, controlled residential ventilation with heat recovery, biogas from the local farmer, ...

Using radiators makes a heat pump almost impossible. In any case, the maintenance costs become nearly unaffordable.

For a gas heating system with radiators, only controlled ventilation or solar heating for hot water is suitable. The latter is more cost-effective, while the former is more comfortable.
