Hello,

we are planning a new build and have decided on a gas condensing boiler system with solar support for water heating and space heating, as well as a water-carrying fireplace.

Now, there are different systems and companies for heating with solar, and we would like to know about your experiences: Viessmann, Vaillant, Buderus? I have already gathered some information about Vaillant.

Then there is the question: boiler or furnace?
Is there a difference? If so, what is it, and which would be better for a single-family home of about 150 m2 (1600 sq ft)?

Someone recommended a gas condensing boiler with a solar system from ROTEX.
In this system, the solar collectors are filled only with water and can drain themselves back into the tank in the basement when the sun is not shining. The system can be refilled with water by the user; otherwise, it is maintenance-free.

This would eliminate the need to replace the fluid in "standard" solar systems, which is apparently necessary after a few years. Is that correct?

Does anyone know such a system and can share their experience?

Also, which size of solar collectors and tank capacity would you recommend for a 1150 m2 (12,375 sq ft) single-family home?

Thank you very much in advance for your answers!!!

Why this combination?
Solar thermal systems have rarely proven to be truly cost-effective in single-family homes. Additionally, I would invest the extra effort and cost for the hydronic fireplace elsewhere. Are you perhaps aiming for KfW 55 standard? ;-)
In many cases, it is difficult in practice to operate a system optimally. When several other components (heat generators) are added, it usually ends up being a money pit. The promotional brochure, of course, made it look quite different. 😉

Sorry, I didn’t quite follow that.

What kind of problems can occur with the chimney?

We definitely want a chimney. That’s why we also want to use it for heating.

We probably won’t reach KfW 55 standard since we won’t have a pellet heating system. But that doesn’t really matter.
