Dear forum members,

We are currently in the process of planning our own home.
Key details (as we envision it):
approximately 145m² (1,560 sq ft) of living space, no basement, one and a half stories - no mechanical ventilation system and no heat pump desired, entire house with underfloor heating.

Idea: Gas condensing boiler for domestic hot water in summer and when the house is unoccupied (output range about 1.5kW - 15kW, sizing by installer), pellet stove with water jacket for transitional and winter periods when at home (hydronic output range about 3.0kW - 12.7kW, air output 1.5-3.3kW).

According to the 2016 energy saving regulations, as far as I understand, it is mandatory to combine a gas condensing boiler with a solar thermal system. Can I replace the solar thermal system with the pellet stove instead (I don’t see the cost-benefit advantage)? Does anyone operate such a system and could share their experiences?

Thank you very much!

P.S.: Apologies if any information is missing.

No. Renewable energy is mandatory. It can be solar, but it doesn’t have to be. Solar is just the most common option because it’s affordable. Pellets are also included. Karsten

Wood is a renewable energy source.
I would recommend discussing this with an energy consultant.

Using only gas is possible if it is biogas. So, if someone has a biogas plant nearby and can connect to it, they might be allowed to forgo solar thermal systems. But how many people does that apply to?

Edit: I think I misunderstood you, are we talking about the same thing?

In case I wasn’t clear, I meant

condensing boiler + solar thermal system + buffer tank!

Or alternatively, according to the Energy Saving Ordinance 2016

condensing boiler + pellet stove with water jacket + buffer tank?

I have really searched a lot and for a long time online, biomass/pellets are mentioned repeatedly, but I haven’t yet found this specific combination in connection with the Energy Saving Ordinance 2016.

Our future home builder also needs to get informed first; I just wanted to gather some information in advance...

Thanks for your answers (it gives me hope that this will work)!

Everything built as described above is working great so far...

Hello

Why not install a thermal solar system instead of the gas boiler?
This would ensure a reliable supply of hot water even during summer and transitional seasons.
