We are currently planning our terrace. It will have a total area of 45m² (480 sq ft) and will extend across the entire width of the house and wrap around the corner.

Now we are wondering how to handle the drainage. Did you build a separate infiltration system or connect the terrace drainage to an existing system? Or do you let the water run off onto the surrounding lawn? It could be quite a lot of water when it rains heavily.

Yes, the soil here is also clay and drains very poorly. So it’s better to go with the drainage system after all. Let’s see if I can still access the downspouts at all...

Has anyone here ever built a terrace substructure using aluminum? It sounds appealing since, presumably, after about 15 years, you would only need to replace the decking boards on top.

We’re wondering:

- What load capacities do the profiles have, and what span lengths can they cover?
- Also, are we likely to see the metal shining through the 2mm (0.08 inch) gaps between the boards?
- Could it start squeaking after a couple of years?
- Would this be affordable?

Any tips?
