We are currently planning our terrace. It will have a total area of 45m² (480 sq ft) and will extend across the entire width of the house and wrap around the corner.

Now we are wondering how to handle the drainage. Did you build a separate infiltration system or connect the terrace drainage to an existing system? Or do you let the water run off onto the surrounding lawn? It could be quite a lot of water when it rains heavily.

Install a drainage system. Connect it to the roof gutter downspout. This is safer.

The gutters are located on the opposite side of the house. That’s quite a distance. Still?

The solution is the safest option; however, much also depends on the infiltration capacity of the adjacent soil. We did not install any special drainage system, but our terrace is only 20 m² (215 sq ft), directly next to 300 m² (3,230 sq ft) of lawn, and some water also drains through the gaps between the stones.

We have already experienced several heavy rain events, and so far, we have not had any flooding.

That depends on your soil. Here, due to clay layers, infiltration is not possible. Therefore, all rainwater, regardless of type, must be drained into the lake. This is done through an additional stormwater drainage system. The gutters are connected to it, and our terrace drainage is connected to it as well.

My terrace extends along one side of the house for 10m (33 feet) plus another 6m (20 feet) around the corner. On the house side, I installed a drainage system and placed 8m (26 feet) of ACO drainage channels along the "lawn side."
