Hello everyone,
we are currently working on a practical solution for our hallway area.
We have a relatively narrow hallway, so there is limited space for shoes near the front door. Therefore, we would like to walk about 2 meters (6.5 feet) into the house WITH our shoes on, and then take them off and store them at a suitable spot.
For this, we need a relatively long runner/rug of about 2 to 3 meters (6.5 to 10 feet) that is, of course, winterproof, easy to wipe clean or vacuum, and also visually appealing.
What bothers me a lot is that a normal “carpet” gets dirty very quickly, especially in winter. Washable rugs in 3 meters (10 feet) length are rather impractical for the washing machine.
Does anyone have any ideas or has already thought about something similar and perhaps found a suitable solution?

Nice rugs don’t stay looking good for long and are delicate. Durable rugs don’t look nice and are uncomfortable to walk on without shoes.
Besides, you also have to vacuum a durable rug every day.

That space ends up unused and walking on it with socks or slippers isn’t practical without spreading sand all over the house. Suggestion: place a bench or chair by the door, take off your shoes there, and then carry them inside.

That would also be the entrance to our basement—so we’d inevitably walk over it with socks.
The front area of our house is just very narrow, so the first 2 meters (6.5 feet) would inevitably get dirty.
Taking shoes off outside... yes, that’s an option, but we really don’t have the space for a bench, and it would be rather impractical anyway.
Maybe we really have no choice but to place a bench somewhere inside (which we basically already have) and then put two shoe drip mats on the sides. The center area would then have to be mopped repeatedly, unfortunately.

WilderSueden11 Dec 2023 10:04I got a large doormat from Aldi once. Since the entrance area was paved, it’s been enough to vacuum it every few days. Right by the door, we have a shoe rack with a bench, so you can change your shoes there.
Why not show the floor plan? If you have to walk through regularly, you definitely don’t want to gather dirt. Otherwise, it will spread throughout the entire house.

Here is a 3D rendering – it actually looks quite similar to the original drawing 😀
The window was replaced with a full glass front door panel, and the staircase railing is entirely made of glass.
Currently, we have a shoe bench in front of the glass railing and a standard doormat from Aldi in a "standard size" placed at the entrance area right by the front door.
On the left wall, we have a drip mat (which prevents the front door from opening fully) – we need more depth here. It is actually slightly deeper than shown in the picture, but a regular drip mat is still too thick to allow the door to open completely.
