ᐅ Is the real estate market increasingly forcing families to build their own homes?

Actually, we would prefer to avoid building. Unfortunately, existing properties within a 20 km (12 miles) radius have become quite expensive, and affordable rental houses with small gardens are simply scarce.
Until now, we have been living in an old rental apartment without a garden. We would like to change that, but there is a lack of options. The listings on various platforms are overcrowded with families looking for affordable housing.
Who is familiar with this situation, and how do you deal with it?

Thierse, you don’t want a house, fine. Just don’t badmouth owning a home. My home, my castle. Stick to your ETFs, we’ll keep our concrete gold. Exactly, and you don’t have any issuer risk.

That's true, in rural areas you usually need a second car, but honestly... if we had wanted to build 30km (19 miles) further away, the plot alone would have cost ten times as much, so we would never have been able to afford the same size. A second car, on the other hand, is definitely manageable.

And in old age, I’ll end up eating the roof tiles because the meager pension won’t be enough to cover the necessary repairs. Many people underestimate the costs of maintaining a house. You only realize it over the years as the property gets older. Owning a home is rarely a profitable venture, and no amount of wishful thinking changes that.
"A 20 km (12 miles) radius is kind of laughable, says someone who commuted 15 years from the suburbs into the city (about 35 km / 22 miles) and spent half an hour on the one-way trip."
Mobility is expensive. Especially in rural areas, you often need a second car. Or the kids need one too to get to their training or education. Then don’t bother trying to reach for the stars. Accept what is offered to you.
