How important is the length of the silencer in the ventilation system?

Helios sells flexible duct silencers with a length of 1000 mm (39 inches) and recommends using them without shortening. In practice, however, the silencers are often cut down because the required installation space is not available. Helios considers this a common compromise but does not specify minimum lengths for effective sound attenuation.

How do you evaluate the lengths of silencers?

How long is your silencer? Are you satisfied with the noise reduction?

We have a Helios controlled residential ventilation system EC 370. Our silencer is shortened to 420 mm (17 inches) and we are dissatisfied with the noise levels.

Is everything connected in the HAR (house air return)... the second one is half a meter (20 inches) away from the first one... but there is a T-piece in between, through which the ground floor is then vacuumed...

So I have 1000mm (40 inches) of sound dampening on the ground floor and 1500mm (60 inches) on the upper floor.

Here is a picture... you can see the small silencer in the top right corner, the larger one is next to the light fixture on the right...

This way, I have 1000mm (40 inches) of sound attenuation on the ground floor and 1500mm (60 inches) on the upper floor.

Two silencers are definitely ideal, especially if they are different. In system engineering, the second one is usually installed closer to the outlet and sized so that flow noise from the ductwork is also reduced. However, with mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, such noise can generally be neglected.
