Hello everyone,
we recently built a new house and had our driveway to the garage, as well as the parking area where we plan to lay paving stones, excavated, filled with crushed stone, and compacted.
However, since we are planning a flower bed near the entrance, the area for the bed needs to be cleared of crushed stone again so I can fill it with soil. How deep do I need to remove the crushed stone to give the roots enough space and ensure proper water drainage?
Thank you very much for your help!

It depends on what you want to plant. Some plants can grow quite well even in compacted gravel, while others don’t like it at all. Generally, I would remove everything, since it’s probably only about 30-40cm (12-16 inches). You don’t need to worry about drainage, as gravel allows water to infiltrate very well.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I was leaning towards that as well. However, the gravel layer is no more than 40cm (15.7 inches). I would also have secured the edge with curb stones set in concrete.
We are not entirely sure yet, but it will likely be a mix of ground cover plants and small bushes or trees.
